Renewable Energy for Buildings
October 2008
Copies of the presentations from the seminars are available below.
New buildings are increasingly required by both national and local policy to include onsite renewable energy. The national 2016 zero carbon homes policy requires new dwellings to meet a growing amount of their energy demand from renewables, with the Government signalling there will be a similar policy for new non-residential buildings; while local authorities are setting targets for renewable energy generation from new buildings in their emerging Local Development Frameworks (LDFs).
The seminars covered:
- Policy requirements for renewable energy in buildings
- Issues to consider when looking at installing renewable energy in new buildings
- Pros & cons of each renewable energy technology
- Costs of each technology, including both capital & running/maintenance costs
- Amount of energy & the CO2 savings that each technology generates
- Building/development types & situations that each technology is suitable for
The seminars looked at the following technologies:
- Biomass heating
- Combined Heat & Power (CHP)
- Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP)
- Small-scale wind
- Solar PV
- Solar water heating
The seminars were organised by the Devon Sustainable Building Initiative (DSBI) on behalf of Renewable Energy 4 Devon (RE4D), a partnership that provides independent renewable energy advice & support within Devon.
