Sustainable Building - the good, the bad & the reality conference

The Eden Project, Cornwall

11 October 2006

Recent years have seen a dramatic boom in interest in sustainable design & construction among clients, policymakers, building professionals, the construction industry & the wider public alike. Increasingly this interest is manifested in greater regulation & growing customer demand & client requirements.

Driven by factors including increasing concern about environmental issues, such as climate change & rising energy prices, sustainable construction has entered the mainstream.

Keynote speaker Bill Dunster, Director of Bill Dunster architects zedfactory

As a result, there have been a rising number of sustainable construction projects in recent years, both new build & refurbishment, including individual homes, larger residential developments, schools, offices, hospitals and many other buildings. It is crucial we learn the lessons, both good & bad, from these projects, as the demands & requirements for sustainable construction increase.

Chaired by broadcaster & designer Charlie Luxton, the conference brought together leading practitioners of sustainable construction to share their knowledge & experiences from their own sustainable construction projects, allowing delegates to take away useful practical learning which they could apply to their particular project or discipline.

The conference was organised by a unique partnership of the Centre for Sustainable Futures (CSF) at the University of Plymouth, the Cornwall Sustainable Building Trust (CSBT), the South West branch of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA SW) & the Devon Sustainable Building Initiative (DSBI).

It was supported by the Association for Environment Conscious Building (AECB), CITB Construction Skills, the Eden Project, Future Foundations, the Government Office for the South West (GOSW), the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), Regen SW, the SW Regional Development Agency (SWRDA) & the SW Regional Assembly.
